The weather in the center of the country has been completely insane this spring (2011). Massive storm fronts bring unheard of destruction and flooding. This spring we happened to visit my family during a rash of these storms and got some first hand experience with a tornado. My family now lives in Southern Illinois and when we visit them we fly in and out of the St. Louis Airport. This time around we flew out moments before the St. Louis airport was struck with massive tornado tearing a massive hole in the roof of the airport. (devastation)

A few months ago a van full of scumbags showed up at my door and stayed through the weekend... They were fresh off what they were calling the "Scumball Rally", an attempt to follow around the famed Gumball Rally race, their job was to drive around following the race parting and run into what ever they happen to run into. They made it as far as Las Vegas before heading to Southern California to party with us.

Forever young is always an invited song when hits the radio on long road trips, I'm glad these dudes rolled through and posted up for a few days. It was an invited disturbance to the everyday bullshit of our Southern California experience, You can maybe find out more on Wade Scarpelli and the dudes over at scarea.net...

Brian is the some what interesting "web marketing" dude for éS, what ever the fuck that means... I work with Brian on éS projects and have become acquainted with him in a work only relationship. As I get older find myself in work only relationships with a lot of people, the nature of this type of relationship takes on very strange constructs and my Brian Jones experiences have mostly been based in the daily operations of éS. Every once in a while you can fashion a glimpse into the soul of Mr. Jones, it being a landscape of emotion, a blaze of hair, and glasses that mirror ones iner-reaches of what they think their hair and glasses should be... and... During the winter holidays I try to make my way back up to Northern California, this past trip on the way back down the Grapevine was closed do to heavy snow and ice. My wife and I were forced to divert and take the 101 which is way longer, the weather was really bad so we stopped for the night in San Luis Obispo, a collage town with loads of bars. Long story short we drank ate and stayed the night, in the morning we stopped at Pismo Beach just of the cost to drink our coffees before heading down the road.

Mr. Aren Anderson is fast becoming a frequent feature on Ofad. This is partly due to him sitting five feet from my desk at work and the fact that he is a very humble hard working bad ass.

About a year and half ago Aren had moved to Tustin California just north of the 55 freeway in fairly overcrowded neighborhood filed with apartment houses. Aren would always have trouble finding a parking spot and on occasion he would have to park several blocks away. Needing a solution to his problem Aren started looking on Craigslist for fold-up bicycles, besides being really cool they were perfect for his dilemma. This is a portrait of Aren Anderson and bicycle.

Years ago I had the chance to go to China by myself with $300 to my name...

Years ago I was asked if I wanted to go to China for the then Asian X-Games. The people promoting the event in China would provide the plane ticket and hotel for two days, the rest was up to me. I was ridiculously broke at the time and my life was kind of in a tailspin, the trip would be hard to pull off on no money and if I wanted to go I would have to go alone. I had a friend who helped set the whole trip up and he was living in Shanghai, I knew if I could get there I could crash at his place and he would show me around.

So I ended up asking the promoters to book a ticket for a two week stay in China, I would fly into Beijing and fly out of Shanghai. It would be up to me to make my way up to Shanghai to make it to my return flight. My goal was get over there skate the contest and travel to Shanghai and stay with my friend for the remaining 10 or so days.

As I arrived in Beijing I started to realize that my situation was kinda of jacked I had no idea on how I would make things work let alone get up to Shanghai for my return flight. Looking back on that trip I realized how sketchy it was to be in China for two weeks with $300 and no place to stay. I entered the contest and received an award for dead last. The contest was really low budget and sketchy, it was held at the desolate and very surreal Happy Valley amusement park. Over the next two weeks I had the luck of meeting some really awesome people that took care of me and helped me to get around. We ended up traveling the country on trains and buses and partying and skating. Nate, Jay, and George from Australia, I owe everything to these dudes and want to thank them for all the help.

In all the trip was epic, but really surreal.

This weekend was a cold one out in the area of Palm Springs / Twenty Nine Palms, we made are way out to Joshua Tree for some car camping done right. The Caddy is a epic road trip vehicle, smooth ride and lots of space. About six months go this car came into our lives via my wife's Aunt and it has made a marked difference on how I view driving.

I have known Josh South for years now and when I look back I start to realize the role his friendship has played over the years. As you get older and time gets colder things start to shape out of nowhere, your life changes in larger and weirder ways. Events, people, time, all blur as the speed of your free-time passes into smaller and smaller chunks, friends go and shit falls by the wayside. Josh is an interesting one because I meet him a really long time ago in a really small town, we were both not from that walk of life but as it seemed we were stuck there. Over the years the Josh South from that little town in Indiana faded into the past and got forgotten.

I long time later I received contact from him by chance, I know now that if had not happened the way it did I would not know Josh as good as I think I know him now. Years latter and a few months ago Josh let me know he was getting married. Now as you get older you hear this sorta shit all of the time and it just seems like what people do as they reach a certain point. With Josh it was a bit different and this news seemed so rad and out of nowhere. It did not seem crazy or half cooked or safe or any other bullshit reasons why people get married, it just seemed right and that got me both really stoked and really tripped out. I could tell he was so legitimately stoked and it was now time to settle into the role of husband. Prior to him telling me this I had meet his girlfriend / future Miss. South only once. Her name is Mariela and when I first meet her I kept blowing it and forgetting her name or saying it completely wrong, she is very sweet, super smart, and really funny.

So here's to Josh and Mariela South you guys rip and I'm glad to be a friend to the both of you.

Years ago I was on a skate trip around Europe - first London, then the south of France, onto Germany into Sweden, three weeks of planes, trains, and automobiles. Our photographer for the trip was Rhino, I had never skated with or met Rhino until this trip and was soon super stoked that he was on it. As the trip progressed it became apparent that Rhino had no qualms about getting into crazy situations and was down to see where things lead, that is to say the dude had no hangups.

As I look back allot of what made that trip for me was being on crazy schedule and letting things pile out of control while rolling with it the whole time. Rhino was on that same schedule of piling out of control but somehow throughout the whole trip he retained his composure while parting more then any of us. He was the most together and reliable one on that trip, you knew that Rhino was there if shit got crazy and he could crush anyone.

This photo was shot from a moving train while leaving London England, I was at the window with my point and shoot camera when I looked across the train to see that the most epic industrial building in the history of Rock N Roll passing by. Not being able to lean in to shoot a photo I handed my camera to Rhino as he was sitting next to the window, he shot one photo and nailed it spot on. Every time I look at this photo I wish I had been the one who shot it and think how sick it is that Rhino pointed and clicked and the photo turned out so perfect. This photo will always remind me of that trip and shit went down in so many ways.

Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a large canyon, approximately ten miles (16 km) long and up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep, located on the western side of Kauaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River arising from the extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale, among the wettest places on earth.

Geologically the canyon is carved into the tholeiitic and post-shield calc-alkaline lavas of the canyon basalt. The lavas of the canyon provide evidence for massive faulting and collapse in the early history of the island. The west side of the canyon is all thin, west-dipping lavas of the Napali Member, while the east side is very thick, flat-lying lavas of the Olokele and Makaweli Members. The two sides are separated by an enormous fault along which a large part of the island moved downwards in a big collapse.

The canyon has a unique geologic history—it was formed not only by the steady process of erosion, but also by a catastrophic collapse of the volcano that created Kauaʻi.

Like the other Hawaiian islands, Kauaʻi is the top of an enormous volcano rising from the ocean floor. With lava flows dated to about 5 million years ago, Kauaʻi is the oldest of the large Hawaiian islands. Roughly 4 million years ago, while Kauaʻi was still erupting almost continuously, a portion of the island collapsed. This collapse formed a depression, which then filled with lava flows.

In the time since, rainwater from the slopes of Mount Waiʻaleʻale have eroded Waimea Canyon along one edge of the collapse. The cliffs on the west side of the canyon are composed of thin lava flows that ran down the surface of the Kauaʻi volcano. On the other side of the canyon, the cliff walls are built from thick lava flows that pooled in the depression. Over time, the exposed basalt has weathered from its original black to bright red.

Waimea Canyon State Park encompasses 1,866 acres (7.5 km²) and is a popular tourist attraction on the island. It provides a wilderness area with numerous hiking trails. It can be accessed from Waimea on Hawaiʻi state road 550, which is 18 miles long and leads up to Koke'e State Park. The island of Niihau, only a short distance west of Kauai at that point, can be clearly seen from the highway.

I recently got the chance to spend an entire day in the comforting love of my friends and family. On this particular day I was graced with the accompaniment of my brand new bride Michelle Rusczyk. The whole day took on an overwhelming rush of emotion, even now I get chills writing about. As this day progressed into the night the party that usually fallows a wedding ensued and I have to say it was a good one.

These photos are a small collection of a rather awesome set that good friend and ripping photographer Mr. Jason Silverick shot for us on our big day.

We found this really amazing sight which is most likely a very common thing on the Island of Kauai. We say this rainbow while driving out to the town of Waimea on the west side of the Island. The soil on that side of the Island is a very rich dark red color casting a depth to all of the other colors you encounter.

It takes a rather short time to drive from one end to Kauai to the other, on the way you encounter a amazing difference scenery. When you make your way to the western side of the island you begin to get a feeling of an island that was built up by agriculture and not tourism, as you pass through the countryside as old sugarcane processing plants and rusted out buildings silhouette. These icons silhouette the highway along side the mountains and valleys, they seem to be perfectly placed in history and lend them selves to the scenery.

Ten years ago I went on a really epic two week trip to Alaska with Mark Whiteley, Joe Brook, and Slap Pals...

When I was twenty two just newly skating for the company Foundation and living in Northern California Santa Rosa to be exact.
I got a call from Joe Brook at Slap Magazine asking me if I could get Foundation to buy me a plane ticket to Alaska, he was trying to put a skate trip together and wanted me to come along. I had been on plenty of skate trips with just my friends and had crossed the country several times by then but I had not been on any magazine trips.

So I told him fuck yeah I'll do it, an article in Slap and a trip to Alaska sounds like an awesome time. The trip was to be two weeks driving around Alaska in the summer with Jerry Hsu, Judd Hertzler, Tony Cox, Joe Brook, and Mark Whiteley, we were to try and fill ten pages if we could.

If I remember correctly this photo by Mark was shot when we got to the city of Fairbanks about a eight hour drive north of Anchorage.

We had just gone to a thrift store and bought a bunch of stupid shit, I was in my new coonskin cap eating a banana and Tony Cox has his aviator rig. We were all going nuts after being cooped up in a car for too long and Tony was launching into some crazy shit. Tony can be very flamboyant and theatrical at times, he was awesome to have around. The trip was epic, skateboarding being young, fucking around, and nature. It's insane when the distance mounts and the time changes, things lurch forward with out your permission and you don't realize how rad things can be at the time of their happening.

Thanks Mark for bringing this trap back up in my mind,

My understanding of where GSD may be from?
Born and raised in the Midwest, GSD at some point made his way across the US to California. Meeting with all of the social clashes that divide this great country, GSD found himself living and skating in the Southern California's skate punk scene. After becoming one of skateboarding's strangest and eccentric pro skateboarders GSD sort of slipped into the shadows and disappeared as legends some time do.

I have spent the last three or so years working with Mr. GSD at my job with Soletech, he was in charge of all things content having to do with Emerica. As I worked along side GSD I started to realize that he was of a very different nature then the average boring people you deal with on the everyday. Since knowing him I'm always struck with questions on who Mr. Davis really is and what makes him tick.

He is currently spending a few months traveling around Southeast Asia and has been reporting about it on his site Arcanecandy and the Altamont site, if you get the chance please take a glimpse in to GSD's world.

GSD is very elusive and never lets anyone shoot his photo I appreciate this rare opportunity to snap this quick one of GSD holding up his pro board from the 80's.

I spend a great deal of time away from my mom, in the past five years I have only seen her five or six times. I live in Southern California and she in Southern Illinois, we talk every week but rarely hang out. One thing that is always true when we do get the chance to hangout we can talk about anything. She is the person that I continually go back to when I need someones input on how life works. I just wish she would not smoke so much and that I will visit her more.

This collection of photos was taken over the past five years with two different point and shoot Cannon cameras. All photos were shot with the camera set on macro. I'm always amazed how much comes out of each individual when you see them this close. Things change when you are forced to let someone into your personal space, especial when the put a a camera a foot from your face.

Years ago I blew my knee on a skate trip in Europe, instead of going home I walked around and shot photos...

I was about twenty two when I first starting going over to Europe on skate trips. At the time of these photos I had been over there a hand full of visits and was excitedly optimistic about everything. Things were going pretty good in skateboarding for me at the time and it look ed as if I would have a board out with Rusczyk on it at the end of the year.

The nature of the trip was filming, going to contests, and parting, all of which we can be fun in moderation. The problem was I as usual get overly excited and do not slow down. The result was blowing my knee (ACL) in Berlin trying to switch ollie a over rail to drop.

The next two weeks I spent blowing off everything and hobbling around Europe on a fucked up leg. My only concern was shooting photos and seeing sights. In retrospect that was the best trip ever, solo wandering, drinking, and trying to not get too bummed on my knee.

The results of a busted knee delayed my turning into a pro skateboarder by five years. If it were not for this blow out I would probably be trying to milk it right now broke and sketched about money coming in. It's funny how life will through a wrench into the works and in the end you realize it was for the better.

Field of honor, 1776 flags in Newport Beach

The primarily conservative city of Newport Beach honors those who have given there lives to war.

This sight was in part awe inspiring and very sad, flags blowing in the wind flapping across every step you took. 1776 Flags lining a series of bicycle paths and walk ways that make their way atop a bluff overlooking Pacific Coast Highway and Newport's Back Bay.

The flags flapping in the wind gave such somber tone, as if you were hearing thousands of faint whispers, Voices, tears, hopes and dreams of the now sleeping forever gone. I felt you could walk away with a great understanding if you stood there long enough, a feeling you connected to these lost lives. Instead of listening I did what I usually do, proceeded to shot way too many photos. Paying more attention to the process of what makes for a good photo and completely missing what I should be doing.

I'm no authority what so ever on what was to be said by this gesture but do hope that whom ever visited came a way with the same impression I got.

There should not be things like this in the world, events that take so many lives, the effect of war destroys and leaves all lives involved desolate; waste in it's path. There are no easy answers to how fucked everything is but you could always wish that we have less wars, less suffering, more apathy and more solutions that work to bring this fucked world into a better future.

Chloe Bowers Liebert and Matt Brewer have been an interesting part of my life ever since I first moved to California. I first meet Chloe when I got a job selling coffee to hippies in the town of Sebastopol California. We both were working at The Grateful Bagel which was owned by a very peculiar Jewish couple that did not seem to be hippies.

Flash forward nine years to my first job as web nerd, I was working for an outdoor store running their web site and trying to play pro skateboarder on the weekends. This is where I meet Matt Brewer and started drinking more then I should. Over the years I've spent a great deal of time drinking coffee and beer with both Matt Brewer and Chloe Bowers and here to say that it's awesome that they decided to get married.
